After over a decade, the sixth Final Destination finally lands and honestly, it’s kind of mid in a few places.
This time they ditch the classic formula of a character having a premonition of a disaster and trying to cheat death. Instead, it’s more of a looping past scenario, with the protagonist slowly uncovering the truth about what happened and who’s next. I liked that they tried something new it’s not just copy paste. But then they kinda ruin the suspense by laying out the order of deaths straight away. Yes, they always hint at it in these movies, but earlier ones used to mess with your head a bit more throw you off the scent. This one? Not so much.
What still works is the anticipation, that slow, tense buildup where you’re just waiting for something horrible to happen. The movie knows how to play with that. But when the actual deaths arrive? Kinda meh. Overdone CGI really pulls you out. Earlier films mixed in more practical effects mixed with CG, made things feel uncomfortably real. This one feels a little too clean, a little too “seen it all before.” Like, we’ve had years of horror films now doing the same kind of gore, and this one doesn’t really top any of them.
But credit where it’s due the story does something cool by actually tying things back to the rest of the franchise. Without spoiling too much, it adds layers to the why of everything, digging into how this death cycle even started. There’s a connection to the coroner William Bludworth (by late Tony Todd), and hints that suggest this might not just be random it might be orchestrated. That part was neat, especially if you’ve followed the series from the start. It kind of repositions the whole franchise, almost like this is a soft prequel in disguise.
Could it lead to a 7th installment? Maybe, given the success and earnings it has made in just two weeks. But don’t expect a new timeline or shocking twist. It’s mostly will be prequel and “filling in the gaps” like what all the other franchise do these days.
So, after ten years, was it worth it? For me, this was the first Final Destination I got to watch on the big screen, so yeah it was fun. But was it as messed up and scarring as the older ones? Not really. It’s watchable, it’s got moments, but wasn’t satisfying and traumatizing like the other, not quite.
