Thunderbolts*

*The New Avengers

Didn’t expect Thunderbolts to hit like this. It’s not your typical Marvel flick. This one feels like Marvel decided to take a detour into something darker, more grounded. Think less flashy suits, more emotional baggage.

The story kicks off with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis Dreyfus) pulling together a team of misfits: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). They’re thrown into a mission that’s more about confronting their pasts than saving the world. And then there’s Bob (Lewis Pullman), a wildcard with a secret that could unravel everything.

The base plot if you look around carefully, its about concurring your inner self, that dark side that you probably shoved deep down. Because all the characters in this have had shady past, done things that were beyond horrible and now trying to made amends, but that trauma still exists. We get to see that glimpse for each character throughout the movie and some are just told through dialogues. Sentry’s plot have not been fully explored and left with many questions, but one thing for sure he’s really powerful from what we have seen so far.

Florence Pugh stands out, bringing depth to Yelena. Her performance, especially in the scenes where she confronts Bob’s inner turmoil, is gripping. The action sequences are intense but not over the top, grounding the film in reality. Director Jake Schreier, known for Beef, brings a unique touch, making the film feel more like an indie drama than a superhero blockbuster.

This isn’t a film you watch for the old Marvel thrill, its very different tone, but feels refreshing as well. If you’re looking for something different, something that challenges the norm, Thunderbolts delivers. Also the the new title being reveled officially, its not really a spoiler anymore, that this is ‘The new Avengers’ and how the tide will change from as the group of misfits try to set things right.
