(Black Mirror) USS Callister: Into Infinity

Black Mirror Season 7

This episode is pure nostalgia and a treat for sci-fi lovers. A direct sequel to USS Callister from Black Mirror’s season 4 (2017), To Infinity dives deeper into the adventures and survival of Nanette Cole and her crew after the events of the original.

Was this sequel really necessary? Probably not. While the original episode concluded with an open ended finale that left viewers contemplating the crew’s fate, “Into Infinity” explores the aftermath, offering a fresh perspective on their journey leaning into the “what happens next”. Cristin Milioti reprises her role as Nanette Cole being sharp, confident, and layered, delivering a compelling performance that captures the character’s resilience and leadership. The episode’s aesthetic and narrative pay homage to classic “Star Trek,” immersing viewers in a universe of space exploration and ethical dilemmas, but with that unmistakable Black Mirror twist.

Clocking in at 90 minutes, it felt more like a standalone sci-fi movie or a pilot for a spin off series. It’s not as dark or chilling as traditional Black Mirror episodes, but the world-building and the continuation of the story make it worth watching.

The decision to revisit the “USS Callister” storyline aligns with creator Charlie Brooker’s vision for interconnected narratives within the anthology series. This approach enriches the Black Mirror universe, offering viewers a blend of continuity and innovation.

It’s this specific depth and universe expansion that made me want to write a review just for this episode, rather than the full season…yet.
